The Arthus Phenomenon

چکیده
An intense inflammatory reaction in the pericardium, heart, and intrapericardial aorta can regularly be produced in a sensitized rabbit by the intrapericardial injection of the homologous antigen.

Similarities in the Mechanisms Determining the Arthus and Shwartzman Phenomena
The intradermal injection of ovalbumin in rabbits sensitized to this antigen, under circumstances resulting in the elicitation of the Arthus phenomenon, causes a systemic reaction involving alterations in leucocytes and platelets, and results in cellular thrombosis of capillaries and veins in the injected skin areas. An abnormal metabolic process develops in the injected skin areas and may be t...
متن کاملThe Skin Response of Rabbits to Non-hemolytic Streptococci
An attempt has been made to interpret on the lines of the Arthus phenomenon the secondary reaction which follows the intradermal inoculation of certain non-hemolytic streptococci into rabbits; but evidence in support of this interpretation of the reaction has not been obtained. The facts make it seem probable that if this secondary reaction is due to a hypersensitive state it must be one more c...
متن کاملExperimental Serum Disease
The intravenous injection of one large dose of serum into rabbits caused a variety of changes of considerable complexity. 1. There was an immediate proliferation of mesenchymal cells, including plasma cells, particularly in heart, lungs, and spleen. 2. The signs of serum disease developed only at the time of abundant antibody formation, before significant quantities of antibody were laid down i...
متن کاملAttempts to Determine Whether the Secondary Reaction Is of Th~ Nature of an Arthus Phenomenon. By
In the preceding paper are described the lesions which follow the inoculation of certain non-hemolyt ic streptococci into the skin of the rabbit ; such lesions begin to decrease in size af ter 24 to 48 hours bu t in over 50 per cent of animals show a recrudescence of act iv i ty about the 8 th or 9th day. This phenomenon we have te rmed the secondary reaction. I t usually fails to occur in anim...
متن کاملThe Fate of Antigen (protein) in an Animal Immunized against It
When proteins such as horse serum or crystalline egg albumin which have been selected because they produce the phenomena of immunity are introduced into a normal animal they diffuse widely in the tissue, enter the blood stream, and are disseminated throughout the body. The same substances introduced into an immune animal are fixed at the site of entry and are not found in the blood. When protei...
